Happy Thanksgiving - Everyone!

It's early morning here, and I'm just enjoying the quiet stillness before the busy day begins. Sipping piping hot Spiced Gingerbread coffee in my favorite mug. Of course I just had to accompany it with some crusty bread toasted to a golden brown, topped with some yummy jam.

Simply delicious on this still - dark - cold - holiday morning.

On the knitting front, I have been puffing away on the Hexi's for the Beekeeper's Quilt.

These particular puffies have been sent off to Hope Lives. There, they will join other puffs that were donated to be knitted into a charity blanket that will be auctioned off. I sent in a colorful variety of handspun and commercial puffs.

As the weather gets colder, my thoughts turn to knitted scarfs, hats, mitts, and cozy slippers. So.. the other day I went stash diving. Into the Wool Cave I went -on a quest for the perfect handspun to knit a warm fluffy scarf. I found a warm cinnamon brown fine wool with nubby flecks of color (a two-ply bulky wt. handspun). I think this will look yummy knitted up into a nice warm scarf. Now, I just have to select a perfect pattern. I just love knitting and spinning this time of year.

On to the finished Knits. The Fresco Basket Whip Cowl is finished! What a fast knit. Really some great TV knitting. You know that busy work you like to do in front of the TV, but not so complicated you can't get into the movie because you're too busy counting lace repeats. This will make a great Christmas present.

Well.. it is just starting to get light here, and soon the preparations for the busy day ahead - will begin.

Little Red Riding Hood

Hey there! Little Red Riding Hood - you sure are looking good! I just cast on The Fresco Basket Whip Cowl, and all I could think of was Little Red Riding Hood. Maybe because one of the new shows this season is Grimm. The first episode was a take on the fairytale. I'm using some of my handspun in a 2-ply fingering wt. yarn. The perfect red for a hood. Easy enjoyable knit.

Isn't she sweet! This little darling is a Baby French Bulldog. My daughter will pick up her new baby on Thanksgiving. What a cutie.

The weather is still warm but really rainy today and will be turning colder soon.

Better get on with getting the winter wear around.

Winter's Breath

Winter is finally starting to show its face around here. A few snow flakes are just starting to drift down from a cold grey sky.

Holly-Days - Just in time for some winter spinning, and in the Giffordables shop at www.giffordables.etsy.com now. The fleece washing, dyeing, and carding continue. Will be updating the shop with more batts, locks, and more fiber soon.

Knitting on the Acid Green Skull socks continues. Hope to have this sock, off the needles soon. So many other things to do this time of year.

Harvest Batts and Acid Skulls

Shades of golden ochre, and bittersweet orange are topped off with a generous dusting of sparkling grape angelina.

Last Winter's view from my Window

It won't be long before we are looking at Snow again. Brr.... Some have already had a big dose of the white stuff. So far we have been lucky, and it's above normal temps for today. But... its coming.

Thought I would share one of my favorite Cardinal photos of last year. The birds are already gathering in anticipation of the railing full of birdseed.

We both win on that one - they are fed, full, and happy, and I have a lovely closeup view of wildlife to enjoy as I gaze out the window while I knit or spin.

The Frost is on the pumpkin! Brr.... it's getting colder.

The other day on the way into the big city, Hubby spotted an Amish Pumpkin Patch, and snapped a pic. I see lot's of Pumpkin Pie in that field.

I Love Swaps. This Halloween, I sent my goodies off to a far... away... place. She should be getting it soon:)

As I gaze out my front window across our lake, the sun filters through the golden maples on this fall crisp evening.

There it is! A woolly caterpillar. Hmmm..... I'm checking the amount of black on this little fellow to check and see, just how long and hard the winter is going to be.

Looks to be about equal with the reddish brown.

Crazy busy day , but managed to card up some colorful "Glitter Pumpkins. Fluffy, and chock full of a variety of wools, black carbonized bamboo, alpaca, and topped with sparkly peacock angelina.

Fall is finally here!

I love the fall. What a beautiful bright orange cluster of berries.

The large bush is just loaded with color.

On the rughooking front, I decided to hook up a wool crow. I dyed the wool in a variety of blacks, deep blues, greys, and a smidge of burgundy. He is listed at http://www.giffordables.etsy.com/ , just in time for the fall season.

I have been washing and dyeing alot of fleece, from a wide range of breeds. I just finished dyeing, and carding up these sparkly wool batts. I dyed masham longwool in a variety of red, wine, and deep burgundy. I topped them off with some sparkly Ruby red angelina. I based these batts on my favorite Enchanted Forest in the Wizard of Oz .- Dorothy's Enchanted Apples. Will hit the shop soon.

More on the dyeing front is some 2-ply light fingering wt. yarn that I spun, and dyed.....

Took a pinch of this, and dab of that, and I came up with this Electric Boogaloo, Chartreuse shade. I'm going to start a pair of socks with this, and will post pic's soon.

                   Well... it's a rainy day here, and I'm just about done with the work for the day.

               Time to make a nice hot cuppa tea, and maybe cast-on for a pair of Electric green socks.

It's been a hot one, this summer! Testing out the new ladder that hubby put out dockside. Perfect!

The rain is really coming down, but just a few days ago, this pair of geese came up on my shore to munch on some creeping jenny. They spotted me and off they went.

SPRING TIME AT THE LAKE

Signs of spring are finally here. This Blue heron loves to fish right off our dock. Really unusual to see him strutting across the shoreline. Maybe he thought the early morning fog was a good cover.

A pair of Canadian geese take a leisurely swim, now that the ice is off the lake.

Plenty to do this time of year. Uncovering the perennial beds, raking, and picking up tree branches from the ice storm that hit us a few months back.

Feels good to get out, work in the yard, and sniff the cool breeze coming off the lake.

LUCKY SHAMROCK

Only a few more days til St Patrick's Day. I knitted up this sparkly little shamrock pin for the

March Mystery Challenge.

Took just a wee bit of sparkly handspun to create the Shamrock pin.

I decided to use some of my kettle dyed merino, wool top, tussah silk, and of course some sparkly gold and kelly green angelina.

Ready for clue 3 today! So far a really fun, easy knit.

Is it a hat? Mmmmmm... could it be a cowl?

LUCK O' THE IRISH

Winter does not seem to want to let go! Letting the cat out into the still dark, frigid, early morning air, I noticed the icy white crust on the deck boards. Brr... Needless to say - Kitty did not last long out there, before he was pawing the door to get back in.

The knitting and spinning continues to bring a much needed shot of color and warmth into the cold, snowy days as I impatiently wait for spring to finally arrive.

One of the groups I belong to is a Mystery Knitting group. I have really enjoyed knitting along, getting the clues each week. Since it is March, I was feeling in an Irish mood with St Patty's Day coming up soon, and decied to use some of my green handspun. I had some washed merino and bfl locks in the stash. I dyed them along with some angora, and silk noil in a variety of green shades. I also carded in some cashmere for added softness. After spinning a 2 ply fingering wt. yarn, I finally cast on. I have made some progress, and it's a interesting pattern. Could it be a cowl? Maybe a hat? Not sure yet. Will post photos later as I get a little further along.

February's mystery pattern is done, and it was this fun, chunky neck scarf. Shades of blue and natural shetland were washed, carded and spun into a 2 ply worsted weight.

The pattern is Shizuku by Angela Tong. The name of the scarf means drops or tear drop in Japanese. Very easy knit and flew right along. Love the "Dingleballs" around the edge. At least that's what came to my mind when I started to knit this scarf. I think I'll have to make a few more.

ICESTORM - 2011

Six day's without power! Well... real power. Morning, noon, and night the generator beast was fed to keep the basics going. You know - furnace, computer, and TV.

The bird's kept wanting to be fed and a new visitor showed up. Can you see him amongst the photo's?

Why yes it's a weasel!

Off he went on his way, and haven't seen him since the storm.

Glad it's over. Spring can not come fast enough to suit me!

Well, the sun is shining. I've been up to my work building, and have gotten some carding done.

Time to get supper going, finish a load of laundry, and settle in for a little Mystery knitting.

Looks like fun.

V-DAY AND PHATFIBER

Hubby brought home a beautiful bouquet of Red Roses and my favorite candy, Red Vines, for Valentines day! He knows that I love those crazy things more than chocolate.

The Phatfiber theme this month is gems and minerals. I had to think about that one for a while. I could have picked one of the many jewelry pieces that Hubby has bought me over the years. This garnet and diamond ring, that he bought me one Christmas, is one of my favorites. The garnets remind me of poinsettia flowers... so fitting for the holidays. But, I decided to go in a different direction for this month's theme.

I took out, ROCKS AND MINERALS - a small guide book from the late 50's. I decided to do a little research on one of my favorite rocks in our stone wall.

The story behind the stone wall is as follows...

One day, as Hubby was driving through the back roads by our house, he spotted a huge rock pile out of the corner of his eye. Following the dirt drive up to the old farm house, he knocked on the door and a elderly gentleman opened it. Hubby proceeded to ask him, "Would you be interested in selling any of those rocks that you have out there in your field?" He took a good look at hubby and said, "Why no, you can have all the rocks you can haul, but you better keep one eye open for that old bull that I have wandering around back there".
So... many rocks were hauled that day, and for many weekends after - both Hubby and the old bull keeping an eye on each other. Some of the rocks went into our shoreline, and many went into our long stone wall.
Some are just plain stone, but there are quite a few sprinkled here and there, throughout the wall, that just plain sparkle. Pink granite is one of those.

Pink granite is one of the Igneous Rocks. I tried to capture the sparkle from the large amount of mica in this particular rock, but it was hard to photograph. There are three of these particular rocks in the stone wall, and they really sparkle in the sunlight. I usually have to reach out and run my hand across them as I work out in the perennial flower beds.

Well...the sun is shining thru my front windows, so I think I'll do a little spinning, enjoy my lovely Roses, and eat some Red Vines.

Grabbing a hank of handspun, I just could not stop myself from casting on for yet - another project. Such a fun looking pattern. Of course, I had to drop everything else I was working on, and cast on immediately.

Leaving the room to get the camera for a progress shot, you can see who had to get up on the table, to enjoy a little sunshine.

So... I snapped him! Such a big, warm, fuzzy kitty.

Well.... it's back to some fun knitting, for me.

WINTER'S LAST BREATH

Temperatures are supposed to hit the mid 40's.

WHAT POSSUM?

Just before Hubby was about to leave for work this morning, this is what he found! A Possum had wedged himself, upside down in my bakers rack. The rack is right outside my kitchen door.

Hubby - being the great problem solver that he is, thought of a very creative way to get the possum out. A car jack! Kinda like a smaller version of the Jaws of Life. Very clever, that man of mine. I was concerned that he might get bit, if he wasn't quick, and careful. Well all was going well and then he realized that - the possum's tail was frozen around the rack. So...........

He proceeded to pour warm water on the possum's tail to try to thaw it out a little .......

Then, very carefully, he worked the possum's tail loose from the bakers rack.

Gently laying the rack on it's side, on a foam core board to let the possum go.

He's free!!!!! But wait... he's not moving. Mmmmmm.......let's see.........

Possum inside, on a rag rug of mine. But wait........He needs to be warmer.......

So...off Mr. Possum goes, into a nice sunny spot, out of the wind. Laying on a rag rug, along with some diced chicken breast that hubby found in the fridge. Hubby then proceeded to plug in a heat lamp for him. Hopefully to warm him up after his rough, cold night.

And this is one of the many reasons why - we have been together for over 35 years.

Gotta love a man with kind heart, and warm soul.

He's a keeper!

MORE SNOW!

KNITTING THRU THE STORM

The storm is headed our way, with more snow! Poor kitty goes out... then in... then out.... again in hopes that it will be nice out. But he doesn't last long before it's back in for him. This is the time of year when we all get cabin fever.

I have finished the second pair of Cowgirl Slippers, and I'm finishing the toe on the third pair. This time I am using a heavier handspun in BFL, mohair, and firestar. These slippers knit up so...fast.

Off to ride out the storm, and do a little knitting.

REDHEADED WOODPECKER

The snow is falling, and the birds are busy picking up sunflower seeds from the deck railing. Quite a variety of birds today, including this Redheaded Woodpecker.

I finished the warm, fuzzy, grey cowgirl slippers that I was working on the other day, and I immediately cast on for another pair. Will post photos soon.

Now off to start supper, and maybe squeeze in alittle more knitting.

ON A WINTER'S DAY

View from my window, as I knit through this winter's day. The lake is frozen, snow is coming down, and it's so...cold. I wish this deep freeze - we are in would stop. I would love a nice heat wave of the 40's.

Knitting away on my Cowgirl Slipper Socks, while snuggling in with the doggies, and kitties. It is a quick and easy pattern from the Interweave Knits - Winter 2006 issue. I am using a hand spun two ply of shetland, alpaca, and angora. So soft and fuzzy, they will make a great pair of TV, or bed slippers. I am already thinking about what hand spun, I will choose, to cast on for the next pair.

Off to do alittle bird watching and knitting.

CHINESE NEW YEAR - PHATFIBER

                   After feeding my little friends, I decided to take some time to check out the

Indulging myself in an extra large cup of fancy coffee, I began to take each, and every sample out.

Really enjoying all the rich textures, and bright colors of all the samples on this very cold winter's day.

TAKING IT EASY

BREAK BEFORE - NEW YEAR'S

The boy brought his sweet ole mom a little treat over the Christmas Holiday. Do you see it? That's right - it's ABSINTHE. I had mentioned my curiosity about the spirits, so he brought a bottle with him, over the holiday. Such a good son... what can I say ? ;)
In 1797- it was lauded as a miracle cure. All I have to say after taking a sip, is that it will certainly take
the edge off.

My favorite part of the holiday was watching Miss O - granddaughter - unwrap her presents. She loved the dolls, but the crazy neon green hair extensions that I bought her brought squeals of delight! The extensions were a gag gift because Miss O had decided to give herself a little hair cut.

We all ate lot's of goodies and were ready for a nap by the end of the night.

Santa - Hubby - was good to me this year, as always. Treats, Jewelry, and of course the yearly spinning goodies. This is the beauty that I will be adding to my collection. CHRISTMAS EVE

It's Christmas Eve, and one of my favorite movies is on tonight. I love the the snowy shot of Bedford Falls. Just watching that snow swirl, and feeling the chill of the winter night, makes me feel all cozy and warm at home, tonight.

I... know... I... know... I've seen it - over, and over, every Holiday for years..... There is just... something... comforting... about the tradition of watching it, each and every Christmas Eve.

The presents are wrapped and under the tree, but the best present of all... is that... the old grey cat is sharing another Holiday with us.........

GETTING CLOSE

One of my visitors to the railing this morning - a beautiful bright red cardinal. The lake is frozen, and a few ice fishermen have ventured out on it . Don't know if they are catching anything. I just might have to test the ice, this weekend.

Last night - after a busy day of cleaning, washing, and Lot's of wrapping, I decided to treat myself to a hot soak in the tub with lavender bubble bath. It felt so...good...

TODAY'S SPINNING.

I still have more wrapping, baking, ect, to do... but will treat myself to a little spinning, through - out the day. This natural shetland, angora, and suri alpaca blend is a dream to spin. Warm and fuzzy with just a hint of lanolin to the touch.

PHATFIBER HOLIDAY GIFT EXCHANGE

Those little birds nibble away all day. I started out with 50 lbs. of bird-food. Small seed and black sunflowers, and half of it is gone already. They can really go through it, when you are feeding a lot of birds.

I think my favorite is the BFL braid in red tones, along with the two smaller green braids they fit right in for the Holiday Season.

Also included was an art batt - from http://www.craftyscientist.com/ - looks like a fun spin. I have some orange merino and sparkles, that I might add to it.

ICE - WHAT'S SPINNING

The lake - finally froze over, last night. The geese like to huddle around a dark, thin area of new ice, hoping that daylight will open up - a patch of water for them. Most fly south, but a small flock always seem to stay around all winter.

Yesterday - I cleaned out kitchen cupboards, washed, and put out the new bathroom towels, ect. It's funny, but the urge to get everything in tip-top shape for the Holidays, always seems to come over me.
Could it be a possible MOM visit? Hmmm.....

Let's not forget - that ever important break time. I decided to spin some of the super sparkly roving. I spun some of my kettle dyed roving, adding lot's and lot's, of glitter as I spun. I really enjoyed just watching the sparkle, spiral on thickly, as I spun. It will be interesting to see the finished yarn.

KNITTING?

Every year, my mom receives at least - one pair of hand knit slippers. This pattern really intrigued me. Simple pattern to knit, while watching TV. I'm going to try to get the other one done today, and finish the seams. I will definitely be knitting more of these cozy slippers.

FIRST REAL SNOW

First real snow of the season, and it is sticking. It is - so...cold... out! Below normal temperatures, and more snow is predicted for tonight.

We still have open water on the lake, but the geese found an icy patch to stand on, while the ducks continue to swim in the open water.

It was one of those days, to just settle in, and work around the house. I decided to make -

a big pot of venison stew. It has been simmering all day on the stove, and will make a hearty meal for tonight.

Of course - a little spinning was done.

ICE ALREADY?

We usually have open water, all the way into January but not this year. The unseasonably cold weather is bringing the ice on fast. The shoreline is still open, but if we continue to have this cold snap, the lake could be ready for some ice skating, and ice fishing soon.

This - is what I do when the lights refuse to work on my wreaths. I cut them! I just finished putting new light strands on both of the outdoor wreaths, and put up the swags - inside the house.

Of course .... every once in awhile, I would take a break from the decorating, cleaning, and cooking, to treat myself by spinning some of this luscious cashmere on my Russian spindle.

A girl has to take a little break once in a while, you know. Hope you had the time to treat yourself a little today too.

Storm coming in tonight, so I put my Christmas Phatfiber Gift Exchange together today, and off to the mail it went! I wanted to take some photo's, but would've missed the mail. I had fun putting this package together. Soft yummy spinning batts, bright Christmas green locks, exotic fibers, knitter's note cards, and of coarse a spinner's toy and delicious chocolates. Should get there in plenty of time for Christmas.

Brr... it's freezing outside! There are a pair of ducks, right off my dock. The water is so... cold, I don't know how they can stand it. It won't be long before the lake ices over, if this unusual cold snap continues.

DRESSED FOR CHRISTMAS

My cute little knitted sheep is all decked out for Christmas. He is wearing a sparkly handspun, and knit lopi coat.

The pattern - Sheep in Sheep's Clothing, from Frankie's Knitted Stuff. Just too cute!

I first spun, and then knitted the little sheep. A big fluffy batt, carded with a blend of shetland, alpaca, and angora. Very soft.

Then the little coat was spun, and knitted from the Icelandic sample, that I sent in for the December Phatfiber box.

I carded Icelandic fleece, dyed shetland/rambouillet, cotton, and lot's of sparkly angelina.

Icelandic is a dual-coated sheep, composed of tog - outer hair coat - and thel - a very soft undercoat.

I did not separate the two coats, and spun a low twist single, to keep the lofty lopi style yarn. The two coats spun together are great for outerwear, weaving, or a cute ornament. Perfect for the little sheep coat. I think a sweater or stocking ornament would also work, for the sample size in the box.

MUSIC- BOX PHATFIBER SAMPLES - CHIP OR DALE?

I had fun carding lots of wool and sparkle yesterday. I will divide them into sample size for the December - Phatfiber Box, today. The theme this month is the Music Box. I chose "I'll be Home for Christmas" by Rascal Flatt's. Fitting for December and the time of year. The song and video bring back many memories of trips back home for the Holidays. Kid's bundled up, suitcases packed, presents loaded and on the way we would go.

Brrr.... it's cold out! The birds are really enjoying the seed that I put out on the railing for them to eat this time of year. These are just a few of the many that come to eat. I had some cardinals, sassy jay's, red headed woodpecker's, nuthatch's, and tufted tit mouse's, today. I really enjoy watching them from my window as I spin.

It was a great day to cozy in and spin.
I really felt like spinning something sparkly today. So I decided to spin some merino that I dyed in HOLIDAY colors. I grabbed sparkles and added them as I spun.

A chill is in the air and the boy's are curled up for a nap together. They know winter is on the way and have started spending more and more time indoors snoozing.

Our old grey Smokey is a normal sized cat and I think he huddles close to Spook- my gentle giant - to keep warm.

WINTER and the WOOLLY CATERIPILLAR

Hubby found this WOOLLY CATERPILLAR outside tonight and it looks like it has quite a bit of black fuzz. You know what they say about the ratio of black to brown fuzz, don't you? More black means a harsh winter. Maybe I'll hunt for another one and see what it looks like. One that predicts a mild winter would be better, don't you agree?

WHAT'S SPINNING - LEMMING'S

Fine wool blended into shades of soft buttery mellow yellow swirled with rich wine glide on to the bobbin today. Needed a little de-stress time after all... this... painting.What's this? A reminder as to why I will not follow the current trend and use plenty of color on my walls. I tried to paint them brown, then yellow , then finally back to what they are meant to be.

BLACK WALNUTS AND HOPS

October is finally here! Leaves are starting to change and there is a crispness to the air. I am starting to feel alive again, after a long hot summer. The walnuts are falling and soon I will be starting a dye stock made from the black walnuts for some natural wool dyeing.

My Hop Vines - yes..... these flower heads are what they use to make beer, are really plentiful this year. No beer brewing here yet. So far I just enjoy the fast creeping vines and flowers. I sometimes use the dried flower heads in fall arrangements.

Don't know about you, but Fall is my favorite time of year!

Last big weekend of the summer. Son and granddaughter bringing her in for a landing. What's funny about that one is that she is terrified of her hot-wheel jeep, but loves to rip around on the wave-runner.

Spindle Spun for Ten Stitch Blanket

Just finishing up another skein of spindle spun yarn for the Ten Stitch Blanket. Lots of great color combo's to start knitting the next row. Just grabbing a few minutes here and there to spin a little and before you know it, you have another spindle full to ply.

The family finished up their meal of creeping jenny and off to the lake they went!

Funky Chunky's - Flower Power, my contribution to the May Phat Fiber Box. Chock full of texture and exploding with color. I had alot of fun carding these chunky batts up. I plan to save a few batts for myself to spin.

It really turned out to be a bright sunny day. A little on the cool side compared to last weeks unseasonably warm weather, but still nice.

Found a double yoke in the breakfast eggs. Maybe a sign of good luck.

The pussy willows are blooming and it won't be long til we will be cutting grass again.

Lets get Started!

Begin by putting your cross arms on the spindle shaft and tying your leader to the underside of the spindle with a knot. Be sure to leave enough tail to grab when you want to start the pull for your center pull ball.

Then begin to wrap the leader around the center of the spindle, wrapping around the cross arms, to secure in a solid X formation. Be sure to secure the X on both sides of your spindle.

Do a half-hitch at the top of the spindle at the carved notch.

Tie a loop at the top of your leader to put your roving through to begin spinning.

Spindle will be very light wt. to begin with, but will steady out and spin fast and true very quickly.
This will allow you to get a full 4ozs of fiber with ease without getting too heavy.

I then begin to wrap around my cross arms on one side of the spindle shaft and then the other side.

Remember to leave a tail to pull.

Note: Remember, if you click on the photos, they will enlarge for a better view.

You can start the God's Eye Pattern now, or wait until you have a base of handspun built up first. I usually build a small base, then start my pattern.

Fill spindle to the edge of the X arms and then push down on the ball of handspun to remove cross arms and start center pull ball from leader.

I am left handed so I wrap using my left hand. You can go the opposite way and do the wrap right handed. Wrap which ever way is most comfortable for you.

These Bright Purple Crocus are the first flowers to come up in my yard . I'm out raking and starting the Spring cleanup. It sure is nice to be able to enjoy the bright sunlight and warm breezes. Warm temps are predicted for the rest of the week, but then it's back to colder weather. Or so they say on the weather channel. We'll see.....

Hungry Little Birdies

Well... we saw patches of brown and green grass for a few days, but it just... had... to snow... again... late last night. Lot's of heavy snow all night long and into today. I think it has finally stopped - for a while. So Hubby cleared off the railing and fed the birds this morning. I was able to snap a few. They are camera shy, so you have to be sneaky about snapping them. They sure do enjoy their meal from my deck railing and I really enjoy watching them, while I spin.

Fat Tuesday and 10 Stitches

Fat Tuesday - better known as Mardi Gras has begun.

There are Paczki and then there are the Best Paczki. The small grocery store by us bakes the best.

Every year some people pre -order two weeks prior to the date and some of us just take our chances and go on the actual day. Baking begins during the night before, for the hundreds of filled little doughnuts that will be sold here on Fat Tuesday. Over a dozen different varietys, with a choice of glazed, powdered, or frosted will be offered. There is a special location in the store set up for distribution and we all wait patiently for our turn. There is rack after rack filled with tasty delights. As you can see, I've got my favorites. Now time for a hot cuppa coffee and a fresh Paczki and on to some knitting.
I've added a few more rows to the 10 stitch blanket. I'm thinking the kettle dyed orange wool top will be the next spindle spun yarn to be added to the blanket. Still enjoying each new shade as it joins the rest of the spiral.

Storm ends and Spinning Continues

It is early morning and the snow has tapered off. Just a few flurries coming down.

I always judge the snowfall by how deep it sits, on the deck chair arm. Enough snow for now and it can melt anytime. It is suppose to stay cold, this week and into next. I'm afraid the snow will be around for a while.

The spinning and dyeing continue.

Today my choice is to spin, some of my kettle dyed wool in cheerful Spring colors.

Spring can not be too far away can it?

Spinning through the Snowstorm

This is the second time around for this Circle Shrug. The first time I started to knit the pattern, it was too big. So I decreased the amount of cast on stitches, this time around.

The yarn I am using is - three skeins of Cascade 220 that I had in my stash, in a pale pink and grey tone. Not really what I had in mind for this project, but with some over-dyeing the yarn turned out more like the color palette that I would choose. So far I'm liking it and it is a easy knit.

Snow started coming down early this morning. Still snowing and supposed to continue into the night and tomorrow. So I'm cooking, cleaning, and spinning into the day.

Do not see any Ice Fishermen out today. Too much blowing snow and wind.

Finished spinning the wool / alpaca blend and turned out nice and woolen.

Finished 2 ply wt. 4 oz. and 228 yds.

Off into the wool cave it goes to join the others.

When I don't feel like knitting or spinning anything that requires me to think , I take out my Ten Stitch Circle Blanket and add a few more rows. All the yarn is spindle spun , again just something to grab and go. The wool is kettle dyed top and all the same roving . A nice springy wool and oh so colorful. Busy work, you know - TV knitting.

The Super Fan won in the Super Bowl commercial challenge last night on TV. I knew it would. What's not to like about beer and sheep? Beautiful Clydesdale's and freshly shorn sheep. Think I'll go crack open a cold one and do a little spinning.

Loving the Spin

This really was a fun spin. Nice long fiber that just glided out of my fingers, as I spun into the afternoon.

I added just the right amount angelina to the fiber as I spun, to give a glimmer of sparkle.

I'm thinking spring violets, when I look at the finished skein. 4 oz. and 284 yds.

Off to the Wool Cave it goes to join the others.

Take a Spin on the Rough Side

I'm really enjoying spinning this Lincoln long wool. Not the softest, but doses everything have to be as soft as a babies bottom? There are alot of interesting fibers out there to spin and dye. Half the fun is experimenting and trying something new.

On to the softer side. I finally finished the merino, angora, sari silk, and poodle hair yarn.

Very soft.....should bloom nicely once I start knitting with it. Into the wool cave it goes for now, til I decide what to knit.

Yummy Wool and Chunky Turkey Stew

Would you believe that these locks are unwashed raw wool? I am in Love.... These two fleeces are beyond yummy. The tight little curls on the left are BFL. The silky relaxed locks on the right are a BFL and wensleydale cross. Both come from coated sheep and are lovely.

Yesterday I washed about 12 pounds of fleece and started dyeing the locks. Will post dyed locks pictures soon. I let the pots rest over night and will finish today.

What's for Supper? Chunky Turkey Stew .

I browned the chopped turkey, onions, celery with some leaves in a large stew pot. Then I added, chopped carrots, green beans, chunked potatoes with the skins left on, chicken stock, and few shakes of black pepper. Let simmer all day and ready for supper. Gotta - Love those one pot meals. So I can get to the important things, like dyeing fiber and playing with wool.

Calm before the Storm

I'm watching a bright red cardinal eating seed off my deck railing, as I spin. The wind is beginning to pick-up and the snow will be here in a few hours. Just a few flurries are falling now. The weather channel says high winds for tomorrow and into tomorrow night along with snow and freezing rain. We all know what that means. I don't even want to think about a power outage. The temperature has been in the teens for the last few days. Yes....we have a generator, but not my favorite thing to do.

One bobbin down and 3/4 of the other bobbin to go. Should have it plyed by the end of the week.

Loaded with color and lots of texture - scraps from the drum-carder are a fun spin. I can't seem to part with the teeniest bit of fluff. Once a week - I add more fiber to the spindle. Such a simple pleasure. Spinning and watching each little bit... add something new to the handspun.

Homemade Venison Chili

Nothing like some homemade venison chili - to warm you up on a cold winters day. This is what I made for supper last night. Of course - I had to bake some big biscuits to dip into that chili.

Thought - I would share my recipe :

2 lbs. - venison - (corn fed from the farmers fields, has the best flavor)
3/4 cup chopped celery with some leaves
medium onion - chopped
couple of good shakes - of chili powder to taste

I - brown all this together.

Then... add:

One large can of diced tomatoes
One small can of tomato paste
Two cans of dark red kidney beans
1 to 2 tbs. of brown sugar
Add 2 to 3 cups of water and let simmer all day.... til supper.

It will reduce and the flavors come together. Will be quite tasty.

First Snow

The First Snow of the year fell this weekend. I guess it had to happen sooner or later. By the time the sun was up for a few hours, the snow had melted. Flurries by the end of the week, or so the weather channel says. We'll see.

I'm knitting a really interesting deer hat. I will post a photo after a little more progress. It seems to be the hot ticket for the hunter in your life. In my case it's for my daughters boyfriend.....a Christmas present. Taking way..way..longer to knit than it should. I have a zillion needles, but do you think I could find one the right size? I finally had to settle for one I found over at the Michaels store. The needle is the right size circular, but the length is a little too long so you kinda adjust the stitches from what you have just knit to swing around to what you are trying to knit. It eases the tension on row you are working on. I would have ordered one in the shorter length, but I really wanted to get started on this hat. I had this compelling urge to cast on immediately. My hands definitely do not like knitting with this circular .......may have to order some needles tomorrow.

Beloved Old Slippers - The Challenge

" Favorite slippers" says hubby. Worn everyday for a little over two years, they earned their keep. "Maybe I can save them". So into the washer and dryer they went. The holes in the soles seemed bigger now that the slippers were cleaned.

So, I started to think of a way that I could save them. I know... Why bother? I think part of it is the challenge to see if I could. I scrounged around in the Wool Cave til I found more of the same yarn. No red, but green would do and give them a Holiday look. I started to cast on for new soles. I think I'm going to cut off the old soles with about a 1/4 inch left and attach new soles after I felt them.

I already have a new pair to replace the old ones, but I'm having fun reworking the old pair. If anyone has any ideas as to how to get the job done, let me know. Would love to hear any ideas you all might have .
